Campfire Crush features former members of Roundhead and Raidolaria.
Tell us a little about how you guys came together to form Campfire
Crush.
Jane is a great match-maker. On top of that, I had been playing some
horn with Radiolaria toward the end. We worked well together. The fact
that I'm blessed may also have something to do with it. I'm very
fortunate to be able to make music with these people.
How does Campfire Crush differ for
you from Roundhead?
Much more room! The sonic shelf opened up through the omission of
guitar and cello gave me a great canvass to explore vocals and horns.
You just released your first CD
(Lunar Moss) which was recorded by
John Curley at Ultrasuede Studio in
Cincinnati
Ohio. How was it
working with John and are you happy with the results?
Very happy with the results, but it wasn't easy placing the sounds
each of us make. It was a unique experience for John and I.
Speaking of John Curley there have
been Afghan Whigs reunion rumors
lately. Are you much a fan of the Whigs music?
Hell yes I'm a fan. Of both the music and the boys. I can't wait!
The songs I've heard from Lunar Moss
have a bit of a 60's jazz feel
to it at times.
Do you Agree or Disagree?
I'm very glad to hear that you hear that. It's been a pursuit.
You've been involved in the
Cincinnati music scene for quiet
sometime. Booking shows for Sudsys and the
Southgate House as well
as working for CityBeat. Do you feel the present scene is as strong
as it's been in years past?
It's stronger. Obviously so. Anyone who says otherwise is disqualified.
With the CEA's coming up I was
wondering Who decides what artists
get nominated for CEA’s and what is the criteria?
Each year Mike Breen builds a committee of music writers, club
owners, promoters and other local music intelligentia. 27 folks this
year. The committee is asked to consider artists performing live in town
within the past year. It also helps to have released recorded
material.
How often do you get out these days
to check out local bands? And
who are some of your favorite local acts?
I have to be much more selective with my available evenings. I find
myself doing a bunch of research when I have time on the horizon.
Friends with more time than me are my best resource. Shootin from the
hip, here's some great examples I've witnessed recently of our scene's
forward momentum: Wake The Bear, Bad Veins, 24 Hour Flu,
Pearlene, Buffalo Killers, The NEW Fairmount Girls, Kim
Taylor ......and I'm really looking forward to seeing Banderas for
the first time.
If you could get Campfire Crush on a
tour with any national act who
would it be?
Do I chase the huge venues in front of lots of ears or chase cred? It
sure would be cool to open for a Pixies tour. I could use decent
catering at my age. My heart is in the small clubs though. I'd
really like a tour that allows for a local performance up front. There's
no better way to get
a taste of the new city
your in. That said... I think hanging on the road with Viva Voce, TV on
the Radio or Heartless Bastards sounds
like fun.
Is building a large local following
important for a band trying to
make it to the national level?
Nope. Not in the internet age. Go for the licensing deal that gets
your song on a hip TV program or car commercial.
Any last words for your fans?
Let them know this: There's a bucket of new music being conjured by
Campfire Crush. We have a new rehearsal space with new colors on the
walls. Juices are flowing and we can hardly wait to share our shiny new
inventions. Break out the cool clothes and bury your shorts and
sandals, it's gonna be an exciting winter! |
